Dum Responsa DEI pro te Iessae rogantur, Pertulit AHIMELECH Saule fuerente necem.",English: "Because God was questioned for you, son of Isaia, Ahimelech suffered death through the angry Saul." In the foreground are the three protagonists King Saul, Ahimelech and Doëg. Saul, recognisable by the crown, sceptre, harness and the soldiers behind him, gives the order to assassinate with his left hand. The priest's hat of Ahimelech lying on the ground has fallen from his head, and he is trying to protect himself from Doëg, who is about to kill him with the sword. According to tradition in the Old Testament (1 Sam 21, 1-10; 1 Sam 22, 6-23); moved by Aegidius (1570 1629) and John (1550 1600/01) Sadeler; from the series “Triumphus Martyrum” of 1591.
