Ancient preparatory sinopia for fresco. 

Made with Red Sea earth.  

Very rare 18th-century folk art artefact. 

Toscana, 1760 - 1800 

The sinopia is inside a fine 19th century frame made of wood and gold leaf. 

Measurements 94 x 74 cm 
Transferred and secured on canvas / Restored in 2018 

With certificate of authenticity and origin. 

A sinopia is a preparatory drawing used for fresco painting and mosaic painting. It is made using a special red clay (originally available in Sinop, on the Black Sea) on a wall. 

Once this phase is completed, the drawing is progressively covered with the last layer of plaster.

Sinopia was widely used until the early 16th century, when it was gradually replaced by sgraffito (marks obtained by pressing on the outline of the preparatory drawing) and pouncing (drawings made on paper, then pierced along the contours and pounced with charcoal powder so that dotted lines appear on the wall).
