Zazpiak Bat is a Basque expression that means "the seven [provinces] [do] one," of zazpi ("seven"), ak ("the") and beats ("one"). It refers to the seven historic provinces of the Basque Country.
It is also the heraldic name for the coat of arms of the Basque Country, including the following seven provinces: on the one hand, the four Spanish provinces of Alava, Guipuscoa, Biscay (now the Basque Autonomous Community) and the province formed by the former kingdom of Navarre (now Navarre); on the other hand, the three French provinces of Labourd, Lower Navarre and Soule, part of the Pyrenees-Atlantic. The coat of arms consists of six parts representing each province. Navarre and Lower Navarre have the same coat of arms, that of the Kingdom of Navarre, because these two provinces were united until the beginning of the 16th century.
