This very decorative mask depicts a bird, the Hornbill, standing with widespread wings.
This object was used for the dances, performed during festivities of harvests and festivities of birth.
These masks were repainted before each use.
A rich polychromy and a specific dress would confer to this mask all its fullness. According to C. Roy, each family possesses its own masks.
Wooden masks symbolised bush spirits. These would protect the members of a same family against evils and misfortunes, against the effects of witchcraft.
Former private collection from Lille, France.
Varnish, three colours of paint.
Age-related cracks, the paint has somewhat faded because of its antiquity.
