Offered for sale in this lot: Museum specimen of a Mesosaurus.
The Mesosauridae are the oldest known aquatic reptiles.
The animals had a long, side-flattened tail. The tail and hind legs, which supposedly had a bathing skin between the toes, were used for swimming. The shorter front legs, which possibly also had bathing skins, were supposedly intended to steer. Body and tail could be moved freely to both sides. The head was tall and slender, with a long row of teeth. The nostrils were placed at the top of the head so that the animal could breathe while only a small part of the head was above water. This object can be picked up or delivered but is not sent via mail.
