Provenance: Theo Wulffen, Robert van der Heijden,​ The Netherlands. 
The Ziba are East African people who speak a Bantu language (also called Haya) and inhabit the northwestern corner of Tanzania between the Kagera River and Lake Victoria. They subsist almost entirely on the products of their herds. This mask was used by the Omufumu ("healer" in the Kihaya language) who uses herbs and spiritual power to diagnose and cure illnesses. Acting spirit mediums, the masks are used to represent Wazee ("Ancestors" or "Old ones" ) "come in to the omufumu's head" and speak through him or her.

Proof of authenticity is the presence of a hole inside the Ziba mask for the nose, and the fact it is mentioned in the Yale archives of African Art. nr. 0081632
