‘Bulée’ [pseud. Charles Snabilié, 1856-1927] - Jean Lefort: Een Greep uit het Parijsche leven. Met een Voorwoord van Mr. H. Louis Israëls - Amsterdam - E.L.E. van Dantzig, n.d. [1900] - 2 parts in 1 binding - large 8vo, red cloth with artificial parchment spine, lettering and decoration in gold, gilt edges, coloured frontispiece with drawing by Kees van Dongen.

*Autobiographical roman à clef, set in the Parisian literary and painting avant garde of the 1890s. Snabilié presents, among others, under pen names, the writers Rachilde, Ernest la Jeunesse and Catulle Mendès and the artists H.G. Ibels and Félicien Rops. Snabilié introduced his Dutch friend, the then starting artist Kees van Dongen, in these circles.
Thanks to Snabilíé Van Dongen could illustrate the “Nederlandsche Gids op de Parijsche Tentoonstelling in 1900” for Veldt publishing house. Together with the virtually unknown frontispiece of this novel, this is one of the earliest and least known works of the great painter.
The novel itself is a vibrant, very readable but completely forgotten novel. One of the reasons for this oblivion, apart from the probably very small edition, is that Snabilíé not only freely describes the left anarchist artistic environment, but also famous places of entertainment such as the Chat Noir, the Moulin Rouge and also the well-shaped breasts of handsome French women. That is asking for lack of recognition in the prudish Netherlands from around 1900.
