Express train locomotives of the Series BR 01 were used as from 1925 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG). The first 10 locomotives of the Series BR 01 were delivered with Kurz tenders (2'2 T 30).
These were also fitted with the short Wagner smoke deflectors. Numbers 01-012 to 01-101 were given 2’2 T 32 tenders. The 01-077 was also given large Wagner smoke deflectors for the first time, and these were then used right up until the last of the Series (01-232).
The first 100 locomotives had small running wheels in the front bogie with a diameter of 850 mm, the later ones had a larger diameter of 1000 mm.
Eventually, 231 locomotives of the Series BR 01 were built; 11 of these did not survive the War, after the War most of the remaining locomotives were later deployed with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), and some with the DDR (DR). Both the DB and the DR rebuilt a number of machines and were refitted with amongst others, new boilers, engineer’s cabs and cylinders. Most locomotives, however, retained their old type boiler. These had the well-known small "White" smoke deflectors, as well as a 3rd front signal and sun-visors on the cab. Also the coal box in the tender was raised in order to be able to transport more coal and the pumps were moved to the centre of the boiler. The last of the 01-locomotives were decommissioned around 1973. Sources: "Langs de rails" Nico Spilt and Wikipedia.
Baureihe 01.10 (011/012)
This is the three-cylinder variant of the 01. As from 1937, 55 of these locomotives were built. Due to the war, the originally planned production of 250 units was not realised. Some locomotives were delivered with streamlined bodywork, which in practice proved to be unpopular. All of these locomotives survived WW II and were then taken into service with the DB. By 1953 the boilers had become unserviceable and were then all replaced. In the early 1960s, 34 locomotives were converted to oil-fired units. When re-numbered in 1968 the oil fired locomotives were categorised as the series 012, and the coal fired locomotives as the series 011. (e.g. 01 1075 became 012 075, 01 1091 became 011 091).
The locomotives were mainly deployed in the North of Germany, and in the end exclusively from depot Rheine. These locomotives easily achieved a speed of 120 km/h, and thanks to their three cylinders they could run very quietly, as I experienced during a foot plate ride on the Emsland route.
The biggest problem with these locomotives was the slipping of the powered axles when accelerating. This is because the outer two cylinders power the second coupled-axle, while the inner cylinder powers the front coupled axle through a drive-shaft. Hence, the drive-train was out of balance, which regularly caused broken drive shafts and other serious damage. An example of this is the streamlined locomotive that was stranded in the Netherlands in 2004.
Several locomotives have been preserved, including the well-known 01 1075 of the SSN.
