Little Lukwakongo Mask, characterised by the great delicacy of the sculpture and the firmness of the features. The heart-shaped face, strongly curved and whitened with kaolin, is structured by a long middle line, formed by the long and thin nose, projected in high-relief and framed by the eyes with protruding slit eyelids.
Among one of the most important emblems of initiates of the lutumbo lwa yananio rank, this little mask would take part in collective manifestations, it was placed on the forehead or on the chin of the initiate, or attached to a fence. It would symbolise continuity within the Bwami and related groups, a continuity which links the living with the dead” (Biebuyck, Lega Ethique et beauté au cœur de l'Afrique, 2002, p. 71-72).
