Netherlands - mid 20th century

No. of items: 1
Object: Clock (More lots)
Material: Glass
Style: Art Deco
Estimated Period: mid 20th century
Country of Origin: Netherlands
Condition: Good condition - used with small signs of aging & blemishes
Dimensions: 29×5.5×25 cm
Weight: 0.5 kg

A special clock as a promotional item for Droste chocolate slices. The clock is made of mirrored glass. The movement runs well (AA battery). The wand has been broken, so there is a small fracture line visible at the height of the hand.

The Droste man is a stylised man made of pastilles, that house designer Jan Wiegman thought of in 1923 for the Droste chocolate factory in Haarlem.
In 1931, French designer A.M. Cassandre signed for a design that was thicker, more plume, tighter and more complicated than its predecessor. Cassandre reportedly received 1000 guilders for his design.
The special feature of this clock is that the Droste male does not lean - as is usually the case - on his wand, but sticks his staff in the air.
