This is an ingenious multipurpose beautifully engineered, drawing instrument for the draftsman’s pocket for on-site work. Its case is tiny but the device can be folded out to perform 3 functions: as a divider, a pencil or inking compass. It was produced by the Stanley Instrument Company, probably before 1920 when their Great Turnstile Factory shut down. (See Wikipedia on William Stanley (1829-1909)). It is inscribed George Johnstone who may have been presented with it. Accompanying this is another set of antique drawing instruments of the more conventional variety, in an unusual double hinged case marked William Kidd & Sons of Dundee who were a stationers in Dundee at the end of 19th century.
• Main compass (133 mm) with three inserts: divider, pencil, and ink points.
• Compass extension bar (75 mm).
• Pair of Compass with screw for fine adjustment (100 mm).
• Pair of dividers with fixed points (130 mm).
• Drawing pen.
(Some of the items in this set are later modifications.)
