Semi-wooden hull of the BRITANNIA, on glass and brown background, dimension (without frame) 59 x 19, with frame 65x25.

The yacht Britannia (His Majesty's Yacht Britannia) was built between 1892 and 1893 for the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. Its first year of racing was a real success: it won 33 races for 43 entries. A few years later, it defeated the Vigilant, the American ship that won the America's Cup of 1893. As a result of the changes in racing rules, the Britannia became less competitive, and in 1897 the Prince of Wales sold it.

It passed into the hands of several owners until 1902 when, after his ascension to the throne, Edward VII bought it again for cruising. In 1920, after the death of his father, King George V decided to change this boat in a regatta yacht. Despite its age, thanks to repeated modernisations, the Britannia became one of the best performing boats of the 1920s. It took part in his last race in 1935. In 1936, upon the death of King George V and in accordance with his will, the Britannia was stripped of his spars and scuttled alongside the Isle of Wight. A replica was created in 2010.
