Charles Dickens - A Christmas Carol - 1945.
The plot of A Christmas Carol came entire into the mind of Charles Dickens while he was hurrying through the streets of Manchester on a mid-autumn day in 1843. Intending to ''carry the true spirit of Christmas to every fireside in the country'' he worked several hours a day on the story, and finished it in a month. He rushed it to the printers, and to John Leech for illustration by four etchings and four woodcuts. It was published just before Christmas: 6000 copies were sold on the first day.
The briefness of the gap between conception and publication was the more remarkable because Dickens had insisted that in each of the 6000 copies the four etchings should be colored by hand. His shock on learning the cost (at his own charge) of his extravagant ideas led to a breach with his devoted publishers.
The colored illustrations in this edition are reproduced by lithography, facsimile, from among the most pleasant combinations found in volumes of the first edition, in which the hand-tinting's necessarily differed from copy to copy. The text is from the first edition, unaltered by the changes in word and punctuation which were introduced by the author 25 years after he wrote it.
