French painter, lithographer, etcher and designer of Belgian origin, born Warneton, Belgium 1909, died Paris 1984.
Gustave Sag spent his childhood in Belgium occupied by Germany.
In 1919 he moves to Paris and from his fourteenth year Singier starts painting. He studies for 3 years at the École Boulle. He paints a lot of nature and makes copies of old masters. Then he works until 1936 as an interior architect and furniture designer, installations of shops and apartments. At the same time, he designs and paints.
After his introduction with the painter Charles Walch in 1936 Singier starts painting abstract. From that year he participates in numerous Parisian Salons: Salon des Independants, Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries, etc. and exhibits in commercial galleries.
Singier becomes friends with Alfred Manessier and Jean Le Moal, whose research fits his own mind. The simplified abstract forms and the warm glowing colours of Singier are clearly related to the painting of Manessier.
In 1941 he joins a group of young artists who exhibit their work at the exhibition 'Vingt Peintres de tradition Française’ (twenty artists of the French tradition) in the Braun Gallery.
In 1943 Gustave Singier is one of the founders of the Salon de Mai, along with the art critic Gaston Diehl and the painters, sculptors and engravers Henri-Georges Adam, Emmanuel Auricoste, Lucien Coutaud, Robert Couturier, Jacques Despierre (who suggested to name the salon after the month in which the first meetings were held), Marcel Gili, Léon Gischia, Francis Gruber, Jean Le Moal, Alfred Manessier, André Marchand, Edouard Pignon, Claude Venard and Roger Vieillard.
Like other painters of his generation, Singier discovers Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian; this new journey is the determining factor in his liberation of visual form. His work separates itself from that of Manessier when he finds his own personal qualities.
In 1946 he has a joint exhibition with Le Moal and Manessier in gallery Drouin in Paris. Singier makes his first carpet designs. In 1947 he is naturalized to Frenchman.
In 1949, he has his first solo exhibition at Galerie Billiet-Caputo in Paris.
From 1951-54 Singier teaches at the Académie Ranson. In 1955 and 1959 Singier takes part in Documenta 1 and 2 in Kassel.
In 1957 he has a solo exhibition in the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover.
Singier designs carpets and stained glass, makes wall paintings, mosaics, engravings, lithographs, illustrations, as well as sets and costumes for the theatre, including L'Heureux Stratagème by Marivaux and Antigone of Sophocles, both in 1960 for the Théatre National popular.
From 1967 to 1978 Singier teaches at the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris.
In 1973, he has a solo exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen.
In 1984 Gustave Singier dies in Paris
