1986 Hermitage, Domaine Michel Bernard (1)
Located on the Left Bank of the Rhône around twenty kilometres to the north of Valence, Crozes Hermitage is the longest vineyard in the northern Rhône Valley. It stretches across 11 municipalities located in the Drôme (26).
To the north of the appellation, the vines are located on granitic hillside slopes (land similar to the Hermitage), enjoying a south-facing position regularly frequented by the Mistral wind. To the south, the soil is comprised of fluvio-glacial alluviums and terraces of rolled pebbles from the Rhône or loess. This agricultural area dates back to the Roman era (and maybe even the Ancient Greek period). Wine-growing developed in the south of the appellation during the twentieth century, to the detriment of fruit-growing.
This appellation produces aromatic, fruit-packed wines. Less heavy-hitting (and much more wallet-friendly!) than Hermitage wines, they can be enjoyed from a younger age.
1978 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine De Nalys White (5)
This wine is made from an equal blend of grapes from the three Nalys plots, “la Crau”, “le Bois Sénéchal” and “Nalys”, with the blend dominated by Rousanne, supported by Grenache and Clairette, and underlined by the freshness from Bourboulenc and Piquepoul. Two-thirds of the wine is aged in oak, bringing a density and complexity to the wine. An elegant nose of white flowers, lightly toasted notes, and a very fine balance together with a long finish define this white Grand Vin from Chateau de Nalys. In two words: Nobility and Complexity.
An elegant nose with white flowers and slightly toasty notes. The white Grand Vin of Château de Nalys is beautifully balanced with a very complex palate.
Info on Châteauneuf-du-Pape White :
In the 14th century, the Popes built a residence in Châteauneuf, far from the drama of the court of Avignon. Pope John XXII built the fortress of which today only the ruins remain. Besotted with Châteauneuf wine, the Pope developed the vineyard and ensured its reputation was kept alive - as did his six successors. With the following centuries came a reinforcement of papal viticulture and 1929 saw the official emergence of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC. The appellation enjoys diversity in terms of soil and land, made up of staggered plateaux and terraces where one of the geological defining characteristics is the presence of large smooth pebbles that trap the heat of the sun in the day, releasing it at night. This phenomenon ensures grapes reach a high stage of maturity. Châteauneuf-du-Pape whites are rich and fruity with great vivacity. Their colour ranges from a pale greenish-yellow to a rich golden shade. In their younger stages, their nose is characterised by a floral bouquet. Over the years, they develop aromas of dried fruits and toasted almonds.
