Series: BR 03.
This item is a Series 003 (Until 1968 series 03) of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). See the heading 03.10 for the derived series.
The series 03, was a series of steam locomotives built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) according to the concept plan ‘Einheitsdampflokomotiven’, a multi-annual plan for the construction of several standardised steam locomotives.
Development and deployment:
The BR03 was built from 1930 to 1938 with the purpose of deploying them on rail routes that could handle an axle-weight of up to 18 tonnes. The Series BR 03 met this requirement, due to a lighter framework, smaller boiler and smaller cylinders. A total of 298 Series BR 03 steam locomotives were built by the firms Borsig, Krupp, Henschel and BMAG. These locomotives could achieve a maximum speed of 130 km/h and as such were also used for express train traffic. From the unit with no. 03 123, the pumps were moved to the centre of the boiler. The Series BR03 as from number 03 163 to the 03 298 were fitted with drive wheels with a diameter of 1 metre, instead the then wheels of 85 cm.
After the 2nd World War the number of the units if the Baureihe 03 was as follows: • 145 units in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) • 86 pieces in service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) • 40 units left behind in Poland and were thus in service with the Polskie Koleje Państwowe (PKP). (These were classified as Baureihe Pm 2)
After 1968, the Company Numbers were changed at the DB and in 1970 at the DR. At the DB a 0 was added in front of the existing Company Numbers (03 001 became 003 001 etc.). At the DR, a 2 was inserted (03 204 became 03 2204 etc.) However, a number of locomotives retained the old Company Numbers since the decommissioning of the Baureihe 03 had already started. The last Series BR 03 was decommissioned in 1972.
