The AEG 12X was developed by AEG as a prototype locomotive and was built in 1994. It was used as a universal locomotive for both passenger and freight transport.
Development and deployment.
Built in 1994, this locomotive was deployed by the German Federal Railroad (DB) as the Series BR 128. The locomotive remained the property of AEG and was intended to be used as a test unit and to then incorporate the experiences and improvements into the still to be built Series BR 120. Hence this locomotive was given the number 12X, where X indicated a serial number 1-9.
In 1996 the electrical systems of this locomotive were replaced by a system with IGBT converters. In February 1997, the locomotive was once placed into service. After extensive testing, the locomotive was then stationed in Nuremberg. Thereafter the locomotive landed in the locomotive pool of ADTranz. The locomotive was once again leased for further testing runs after more modifications. After the takeover of ADTranz by Bombardier Transportation, the locomotive wound up in the pool at Bombardier.
In September 2010, the locomotive was shown as a display unit in the Bombardier factory. In 2014 the Thüringer Eisenbahn Association accepted ownership of the locomotive, and since then it has been included in the collection of the Railroad Museum in Weimar.
The initial livery of this locomotive comprised AEG advertising inscriptions. These were then initially replaced by advertising for UNICEF, then by ADTranz, and finally advertising for Bombardier Transportation.
