The Series Re 460 was developed and built by Schweizerische Lokomotiv-und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) in Winterthur and Asea-Brown-Boveri (ABB) in Zurich.
A total of 119 of these locomotives were built and delivered between 1991 and 1996.
Development:
During the 1970s the project "Bahn 2000" was launched, which was a new expansion programme of the Swiss Railways (SBB). In 1985 an order was issued to develop a new series of locomotives which became known as the Re 4/4 VI. In 1987 twelve units were ordered, followed by a further 87 units in 1989 and another 20 units in 1992. The first locomotive, which according to the new nomenclature of the SBB is referred to as series 460, was taken into service in 1992. These locomotives have 4 axles and 4 motors and are manufactured by the companies ABB and SLM. Each engine has a maximum power output of 1560 kW. The latest technologies were used in the construction and manufacture of these locomotives. The driver's cab, for example, was not made of metal but of fibreglass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The entire front was then glued against the body of the locomotive.[1]
Mainline History:
The Series Re 460 was deployed both for passenger and freight transport. In 1994 an Re 460 was fitted with advertising (Agfa film) for the first time. This was an additional source of income and proved to be a success, after which more and more Re460 locomotives were commissioned together with adverts.
