Tangka is a painted or embroidered Buddhist standard, hung in a monastery or on a family altar and carried in processions by the lama or believers. In the Tibetan language, the word 'than' means 'flat' and the suffix 'ka' stands for painting. The Thangka is therefore a type of painting made on a flat surface, but which can be rolled up when it doesn't need to be displayed; sometimes it is called a 'painting on scroll'. The most common format is the vertical rectangle.
While some people consider them simply as items with bright colours to hang on the wall, for Buddhists these religious Tibetan paintings show a beauty believed to be a manifestation of the divine, and are therefore visually stimulating.
