About the domain
The Niepperg family has been driven by a veritable passion for wine since the 13th century. They decided to buy Château Canon La Gaffelière in 1971, along with several other proerties. While the 20th century was a difficult time for the château, the arrival of Stephan von Nieeperg in 1984 marked a turning point, with a leap in quality from the 1988 vintage onwards. Solely organic fertilisers are used and yields are moderate. With the help of Stéphane Derenencourt, the château has been restored to its former splendor. It obtained organic certification in 2014, and promoted to a premier grand cru classé. The future is looking bright.
About the cuvée
Possessed by a passion for the world of wine since the 13th century, the Niepperg family, of aristocratic German descent, finally decided to settle in the Bordeaux region - where else? -in 1971. They purchased Château Canon La Gaffelière and several other holdings in Saint Emilion, including La Mondotte and Clos de l'Oratoire.
While the 20th century saw a long, difficult period for the property, with the wines frequently being considered too lightweight, the arrival of Stephan von Niepperg, the owner's son, as manager in 1984, resulted in a considerable improvement in quality, which only really took effect with the 1988 vintage, as it took three years to revitalize the soil and the vines, and to establish new working methods, with the use of exclusively organic compost, moderate yields, manual harvests, increased use of new barrels (up to 100% depending on the year), and the creation of a second wine in order to be able to separate any grapes of insufficient quality to be used in the main wine. All of these techniques were new to the property, which almost certainly explains the very average quality of the previous wines. This ¿renaissance¿ was confirmed with the following two vintages, and then, with the spectacular successes of 1992, 1993 and 1997, the property firmly established itself as one of the new stars of Saint Emilion.
Canon la Gaffelière's wines are often described as ¿warm¿, a quality that they no doubt share with the affable personality of the owner. They present a remarkable aromatic range, offering red fruit, toast, plums, cinnamon and other spices, and need between ten and fifteen years in the cellar to reach full maturity.
Vintage description 1959 Bordeaux
An outstanding vintage. This exceptional vintage, severely criticised when it first appeared on the market due to its low acidity, produced full-bodied, opulent wines with an amazing cellaring capacity. Following a dry and hot summer, the grapes were perfectly ripe when harvested and gave rise to voluptuous wines. The Saint-Julien and Pauillac positively shine with elegance and amplitude. The Lafite-Rothschild is legendary for its majestic bouquet. The harvest was sparse in the Sauternes region, but nevertheless produced excellent wines, very rich and extremely concentrated. These sumptuous crus have gorgeously intense aromas.

Seller totally wrong and unfair, ha has received the pictures of what I've received and has been contacted by the forwarder who has recognized its fault in writing and compensating him !Please note: some elements on this page have been translated automatically.Buyer claims what he wants because nowhere proof of damage or whatever, I have negotiated directly with Catawiki because there was no evidence, in this case I cannot possibly make a complaint to the company, I have had telephone contact with the company about In this case that investigated the case, there was no evidence of irregularities, the buyer signed off with evidence. while he says that only 4 bottles were delivered without the original wooden box. A crate weighs at least 10 kg before it was signed, he had to know that something was wrong because of the difference in weight. Perhaps damaged yourself when opening the package and blaming someone else for it. Looking at my feedbacks I am very reliable I have always been correct after 5 years of collaboration with catawiki.
Unjustified! judgment here. Who's lying here?
Excellent seller, as advertised. Perfect packaging and fast delivery. 5 stars
Colis parvenu rapidement et sans casse.
Please note: some elements on this page have been translated automatically.Helaas was de eerste fles wijn die ik open trok stuk.
Dat is wel een teleurstelling.
Ik hoop dat de rest beter is.Please note: some elements on this page have been translated automatically.Wine tasting shortly after receipt is out of the question.
The bottles must rest for at least 8 weeks before you taste them, because the wines are completely shaken by the transports they need time to recover
See on the internet how to treat old wines after transport.
Please note: some elements on this page have been translated automatically.Très bel état des flacons qui sont plus beaux au réel qu'en photo ! J'ai du un peu "fouiner" pour déchiffrer que les Nalys étaient de la cuvée "Puits de l'Orme" ! Encore mieux !
Everything was great.
