Impressive and beautifully styled large-format book. Complete with 20 plates and 3 portraits, on thick paper, with collotype images of the icy landscape and the later sunken expedition ship.

Condition: The original binding with minor wear is still in good condition with only light signs of use and a few minor restorations to the spine.
The bookblock is almost spotless. The 23 plates show some age spots.

The (only) Dutch polar expedition 1882-1883 was a scientific undertaking that would visit Port Dikson in Siberia within the context of the first International Polar Year. Due to the thick ice, the expedition led by Dr. Maurits Snellen was unable to reach Dikson, but observations were made on the frozen Kara Sea. After wintering in a pre-fab house on the ice and the sinking of the Varna expedition ship, the whole team - 23 men with sledges and sloops - set off for the south. After a month of hard work they arrived at Vaygach Island and were finally picked up by a ship. They returned safely to civilization on 1 September, in Hammerfest.

A unique and rather rare report of the first and only Dutch polar expedition, certainly in this beautiful edition with gilt print.
