Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609 - 1664)
Painter, printmaker and draughtsman; inventor of the monotype. Born in Genoa, Castiglione began career in studio of Giovanni Battista Paggi. From 1632 he is documented in Rome. Lived in Genoa from 1641-5, where he worked for many prominent Genoese families. Returned to Rome c.1647-1651. In his later years, c.1652-64, Castiglione divided his time between Genoa, Venice, Parma and Mantua, and from the early 1650s until his death, he received commissions from members of the court of Carlo II Gonzaga, 9th Duke of Mantua.
