Fang fans are very rare and hardly ever collected. They must have made part of the households of rich people. The only well-published example has a ivory grip, which indicates that such objects were reserved for members of the social elite. The wooden grip here is a flattish torso of what looks like to be a female that is inset into a roundish stiff leather leaf dried in the sun and bordered with vegetal stitching. The style of the sculpture is that of the northern Ntumu of the Gabon- Cameroon border area. The eyes are made of beads. A very rare item indeed.
Literature: P.H. Laburthe – Tolra, C H. Falgayrettes- Leveau: Fang, Paris, 1991, fig. on p. 63.
Dimensions :37 x 23 x 3 cm.
People – Region: The northern Fang Ntumu live on both sides of the Gabon –Cameroon border.
Material: wood, beads, vegetal binding, leather-fur.
