This is a beautiful, rare, genuine Japanese antique Buddha. Over a 100 years old, from the early 20th Century or late 19th century ( corresponding to the Meiji Era 明治時代 1868-1912)
This is a laquered wood, gold gilt, ritual colour, Dhyana Shaka Noyrai Buddha 釈迦如来 hand carved by a traditional 'Busshi' 仏師 ( a Buddhist Image maker).
Originally part of an old Japanese family shrine, from a old rural estate auction, imported directly from Japan by me.
The Buddha is gilded, has faded ritual blue colour hair, ritual red spot, and a floral detachable manora symbolizing his radiant aura. His hands in Dhyana Mudra ( meditation position) in his lap. He sits on a plinth mounted lotus throne, all originally gold gilded, now mostly faded and worn.. The gilt on the Buddha is still very much time intact and reflects the light beautifully.
A wonderful statue for the collector, altar, or an impressive interior design statement.
Good. Patina, wear, small scratches, small chips, fading, dust. Discolouration, loss, wear and fading of gold gilt and colour, all usual for age/wear and age of manufacture.
Early 20th Century/late 19th century.

I originally trained as a Sculptor then Photographer in the 1980s. In the 90s I had a successful career as a young jewellery Designer In London. I produced collections for Boules, Miss Selfridge, and the Designer outlet Jess James in Soho. With an active interest in Buddhism and Taoism since my teens, I've been collecting Buddhist and Oriental Art since 2003. I source these pieces directly from Dealers in the UK, USA, Europe, and Japan. I've been personally on buying trips to the Far East. I restore lost gems to those bronzes with empty settings, and restore wooden Japanese Antiques where pieces are lost or broken. Many of pieces end up in private collections, altars, and even Buddhist Retreats and Temples. I consider both my restorations, and my collecting, as a meditation within the Karma Yoga tradition.
