The Baureihe 74.4/T12 is a tender locomotive that was used for passenger transport on the sidings. They were built form 1902 until 1921 and reached a maximum speed of 80 km/h. Between 1924 and 1929 the steam locomotives were increasingly supplanted due to the electrifying of the rail routes and the use of the faster electric locomotives. The T12 was then used as a shunting engine and for the transport of goods and passengers on the shorter routes. A total of 1014 copies were made of this locomotive and the last one was taken out of service in 1968.
Development and deployment.
In 1902, one started with a few test locomotives. The series production of the T12 was only started in 1905. These locomotives were delivered to the Preußischen Staatseisenbahnen, the Reichseisenbahnen in Elsaß-Lothringen and to the Halberstadt-Blankenburger Eisenbahn. In 1921, the company Borsig built another 40 of these locomotives. In 1925, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) 899 took over which were classified as Baureihe 74.4-13 and had the running number 74 401 – 74 1300 (except the 74 544 which was supplied to the SNCB). Also, 10 locomotives (the 74 1301 – 1310) were taken over by the Eisenbahnen des Saargebietes. In 1938, another 11 pieces were taken over by the DR of the Lübeck-Büchener Eisenbahn.
After the 2nd World War, a locomotive of the Baureihe 74.4 (the 74 498) was left behind in Austria, which was classified at the ÖBB.
