Unique antique hand-forged veneer iron.
Age: approx. 1880
Used to heat the veneer layer and to warm up glue for it to be applied to the wood (for tables, cabinets, etc).
The iron was laid in the open fire so it became very hot and then it was placed on the veneer + glue (so-called skin-glue). Between the iron and the veneer and on the handle they would use a wet cloth for protecting the veneer as well as hands.
Gluing the veneer with skin-glue is a real antique method (it was necessary to have expert knowledge to work with it). The advantage of this type of glue was that once dried it could be liquefied if the result was not good. That re-activation could also be done with the warm iron and a (damp) cloth.
Dimensions: in total 80 cm long, the iron is 15 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm (lxwxd).
Weight: 3 kg.
