Magnificent Italian ceramic earthenware vase with a very structured Fat Lava style finish, known as Smalto Roccia (stone glaze).
Decorated with hand painted Effetto Lacca (enamel effect) scene San Marino, a Sgraffito design of a ladies head on a red glazed background.
Several factories in the San Marino area produced ceramic in this style in the 1950s and 1960s.
This specific vase is marked ‘no. 88927 Italy’.
Comparable items are pictured in the excellent book Alla Moda - Italian Ceramics of the 1950s - 1970s by Mark Hill.
It is an extraordinary nice vase, rich in colour and texture.
In very good condition with minimal signs of use.
