A 19th century oak jewellery or handicraft box made during the English Regency period around 1810-1820. The box is made of oak wood and is glued with so called "quarttiers" sawn oak veneer, by this way of sawing from the tree/plank the characteristic "mirrors" of the wood are made visible. The middle planes are surrounded by an oak piping in herringbone motif and as extra contrast the edges & key entrance are made of ebony. The removable dove tailed oak drawer with compartments is just as the inside of the lid glued with light blue paper with white dots. The inside of the box is still covered with the original red paper. All the mountings, i.e. hinges, lock and lock plate are original, a working key is unfortunately missing. The box rests on flat-turned oak legs. The box has a deep warm colour, patina and silk sheen of the wax finishing.
