Either belonging to a supreme chief’s treasure or being used in his court by ritual specialists in large-scale mahamba healing ceremonies, the Chokwe figures of a male dignitary known as Mwanangana, or ‘Lord of the Land’, make reference to leadership sources and heroes from the past. The headdress of this spectacular figure depicts the great headdresses usedby the Chokwe nobility.
The Chokwe people, also called Ciokwe, Cokwe, Tchokwe, Bajokwe or Badjok, believe that the Luba Prince Chibinda (or Tshibinda) Ilunga taught the Lunda and Chokwe civility and the art of hunting. The Chibinda Ilunga figures are created to remind the villagers about the power, rank and position of their ancestorsamong the Chokwe chiefs who maintain the well-being of their people and are a role model for men in Chokwe society.
