Engraving - Not signed - ca. 1790

Artist: Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807)
Title of artwork: Wooded Swedish landscape with a fire
Year: ca. 1790
Technique: Engraving
Signature: Not signed
Condition: In very good condition
Sold with frame: No
Image size: 20.2×22 cm

View of a wooded Swedish landscape with a fire. Commissioned by Chevalier Jean-Louis-Antoine le Vaillant de Damery (1723-1803).

Landscape painter Jakob Philipp Hackert began his artistic career in 1753 in Berlin. In 1762, he was invited by the Swedish councilor Adolf Friedrich von Olthof (1718-1793) to his house in Stralsund where he passed the following three years. In 1786 Hackert was appointed court painter by Ferdinand IV of Naples. Continuing his work in Rome, Hackert had become the most famous landscape painter of his days and clients from all over Europe sought his realistic depictions of Italian sites.

This engraving is very different from Hackerts usual French landscape paintings. It does not illustrate the surroundings of Paris or the landscapes of Normandy or Picardy. In fact, the viewer finds himself in front of two views of Swedish landscapes which Hackert had sketched during a short trip to Sweden in 1764 in the company of his first patron Adolf Friedrich von Olthof.

The pictures are part of the description.

  • The purchased candlestick is not Luis XV style end not from 20th century. It is a completely new one!

    Response by seller
    Dear seller,
As stated in the description, these candlesticks were made circa 1930 in England by Peerage in the style from Louis XV candlesticks, thus the name Louis XV style. I added a picture of the original catalog in the lot description. Besides, the peerage marks can be found on the internet in catalogues, where I also based my description on. Besides, the experts from Catawiki (who want and do keep their quality high) confirmed that my description of the lot was right. The pictures are also part of the description, and it is up to the bidder to bid.

    Cheers
