Sublime Ceremonial Spoon – Urhobo – Nigeria
In fine state, but with ubiquitous signs of use. It dates to the pre-war period. On stand.
Provenance: Ex – collection of John Parsons, greater Liverpool area. Obtained from him in an exchange in 2012 by P. Westerdijk.
This highly ornate and decorative spoon of which no known published examples exist as far as I am aware, was collected by a colonial officer around 1950 and given to Mr. Parsons some 40 years ago. The theme of the grip is that of a seated young woman in great state. She most probably represents an Opha, an Urhobo girl treated much like a queen, who recently completed her coming of age rites. She is richly adorned and bears the tribal marks of the old days. Miniature figures of the type normally known to measure up to one meter and over are extremely rare.
Literature: Martha G. Anderson and Philip M. Peek (eds.): The Ways of the Rivers, Los Angeles, 2002, pp. 126 ff. For the full-blown examples.
Dimensions: 40 x 11 x 7 cm.
Region / People: The Urhobo live in Delta State, S.E. Nigeria.
Material: medium density wood.
Weight: 0.351 kg.
Sold with handwritten declaration of authenticity by Dr. P. Westerdijk, museum ethnologist and cultural anthropologist specialized, for over 50 years now, in the study of the material cultures in African nations that live south of the Sahara.
