John ‘Johnny’ Florea (28th May 1916 in Alliance, Ohio - 25th August 2000 in Las Vegas,) was a television director and photographer.
Marilyn Monroe on the set of the film ‘The Prince and The Showgirl’ in 1957.
John Florea, photographer for Life magazine who chronicled the greatest battles of World War II and the biggest stars in Hollywood, then went on to have a career as a television director before returning to Hollywood after the second world war. He continued to work for Life, as well as the San Francisco Examiner, and was appointed photo editor of Collier magazine.
Marilyn Monroe was photographed for the first time by Florea in early 1951. At 24 years old, she played supporting roles in two critically acclaimed films, ‘The Asphalt Jungle’ and ‘All About Eve’. She had also just signed a 7-year contract with Twentieth Century Fox.
On 29th March 1951, Marilyn presented the Oscar for best sound recording to Thomas Moulton for ‘All About Eve’. Florea photographed her on that day, in an elegant black dress, and the images were used to illustrate a feature film, 'Model Blonde of 1951', published in Collier in September.
On 19th June, Florea accompanied Marilyn on a trip to the USS Benham in Long Beach, where photographed her with sailors. She wore the black net dress seen in ‘As Young as You Feel’.
