Jan (Johann Theodorus) Toorop was one of the most important Dutch avant-garde painters of the decades before and after 1900.
He lived from 1858 until 1928, and was born in Poerworedjo on Java.
In 1905, he converted to Catholicism, after which he almost exclusively painted religious subjects and portraits in a slightly more geometrical style.
He thus inspired many artists such as Gustav Klimt.
The signature is printed on the plate and dated 1923, nicely framed behind glass, on the back is also a piece of text.
