Headhunter’s battle axe – Dayak tribe - Borneo, Kalimantan, Indonesia
This battle axe comes from the Dayak tribe that populated the interiors of Borneo. The Dayaks were illustrious headhunters and used battle axes in addition to the Mandau sword during battles with other tribes. Also these axes were used in everyday life to cut down trees, slaughter chickens etc.
The shaft and handle of this battle axe is carved from the wood of the rubber tree. It is elastic which allows one to deliver a greater striking force. The iron part (axe head) is attached to the handle with artfully braided rattan.
This hatchet was taken from Borneo by a Dutch plantation holder in the 1940s.
Total length: 70 cm.
Width of the axe: 28.5 cm.
