Zebus were imported hundreds of years ago in Africa and crossbred with the native cattle (the Taurines).
Genetic analysis of the African cattle showed that high concentrations of Zebu genes were present in all bovine animals along the East coast of Africa.
Specifically the bovine animals of Madagascar are 100% pure so not crossbred with other cattle.
This can mean that the animals have arrived on the island by ship directly or that the animals crossed much earlier via the coastal route (Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia) and then to Madagascar.
Partial immunity to the rinderpest has also ensured that more and more Zebus can be found in Africa.
