Marina Abramovic and Ulay

Famous photograph of performance art duo Marina Abramovic (1946) and Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen, 1943). Signed on the back (signature is covered by the frame; a photograph of the signature is stuck to the back of the frame). Image size 60 x 60 cm. Photograph in a window mat and frame, size of frame 77 x 77 cm. This photograph is part of the 'Anima Mundi' ('Soul of the world', Bankkok, 1983) and 'Positive Zero' (Holland Festival, 1983) performances. This photograph was originally part of a diptych: the other (first) photograph depicts two people attempting to embrace each other. The performance was the actual piece of art, the photographs provide a visible and tangible memory of this performance. Although this photograph was signed by Abramovic, the photographer is unknown. Anima Mundi symbolises the relation between man and woman. Man and woman are each other's opposites, in this work of art, however, they connect. This piece is also about life and death. This second panel/tableau can also be viewed as an independent work of art referring to 'Piëta', a classic depiction of a mother and her dead child, which has inspired both religious and non-religious artists. Note: due to the fragility of glass, picking up of this piece is preferred.
