Heleen van Royen

'This is not done. A woman is not supposed to behave like this. That is exactly why I took this picture. Beyond shame. Inquisitive, reckless and slightly irritated. Because so many women are not allowed much. Fuck it. Throw stones at me, if you dare.' The following months Catawiki will weekly auction a self-portrait by Heleen van Royen. These photographs will also be exhibited during the 'Selfmade' exhibition at the Letterkundig Museum in The Hague (16 May to 7 September). All prints auctioned are specifically printed and signed (incl. edition number 1/3) for Catawiki's Art Photography auction. Printed on photo paper, finished with 3 mm acrylate and mounted on 3 mm Dibond. Provided with a sturdy hanging system, allowing the photograph to 'float'. Paper and image size 60 x 80 cm. Signed and numbered (1/3) on the front. (Note: the first photograph provided with this lot does not depict the signature; this is the original image, without the acrylate coating, made on the 26th of September 2013). "Van Royen's art is never going to be subtle, the harsh brutality found in her books also provides the essence of the 'Selfmade' exhibition - for that matter, Selfmade complies with the museum's intention to depict Dutch literature." (Arjen Fortuin in newspaper NRC Handelsblad) About 'Selfmade': This exhibition displays over 200 photographic self-portraits providing an intimate view into the life of van Royen. Through a multitude of photographs expressing the five themes: love and sex, light and darkness and transience, Van Royen provides an open, honest account of her life, full of self-mockery. The book Selfmade will also be published next to the exhibition; it contains a selection of displayed photographs and a foreword by photographer Hans Aarsman.
