Two Art Nouveau candlesticks, designed by Chris van der Hoef for Amstelhoek.
The Amstelhoek pottery was founded in 1894 by Willem Christiaan Hoeker, who was a goldsmith from Amsterdam.
Chris van der Hoef was head of the decorative pottery department from its foundation until its bankruptcy in 1903.
Candlestick 1: The surface is made of dark-brown glaze with eight concentric rings of dotted green and yellow sludge glaze.
It bears two marks at the bottom: the Amstelhoek stamp and an engraved date “13 10 1900”.
The candlestick is flawless.
Candlestick 2: The surface is made of red-brown glaze with three concentric rings of dotted green and yellow sludge glaze.
One dot of yellow sludge glaze is missing at a foot (see picture), which may as well be a production flaw. Otherwise, it is flawless.
The bottom bears the Amstelhoek stamp and the price (f 1,50), written in pencil.
Both candlesticks are 11 cm high and 10 cm wide at the bottom.
