NAIN: these rugs are hand knotted in the workshops of Nain, a town in central Iran, near Isfahan. Generally very light in colour, using off-white or dark blue as a base colour with a large roundel in the centre Highest quality materials and high knot density make them luxury rugs. Mostly they are made to measure and are some of the most beautiful rugs in the world. Very sought-after by collectors.
Nain carpets are often followed with an additional naming system: 4La, 6La or 9La, where 'La' means 'layer' in the Farsi language. This naming system is used to determine the quality of a Nain carpet; it reflects the number of thread layers which have been used in every weft thread for the weaving. The smaller the number, the finer the carpet and the denser the knotting. To check the number of layers used, all one has to do is count the number of threads in one of the carpet's fringes. If you can make out 3 pairs of threads (see photo below), it is a 6La carpet.
