Louis Soonius lived and worked in The Hague for nearly his entire life. He was educated at the Royal Academy. Characteristically, he painted lively and sunny beach views with people, as well as sea views, cityscapes and animals. Next to being a gifted painter, Soonius was a gifted illustrator. In summertime he painted, just like his contemporary Isaac Israels, the Scheveningen beach. Around 1900, Scheveningen develops from a fisherman's village to a mundane sea residence.
Louis Soonius was a member of the Haagse Kunstkring.
