The Roman pentagonal dodecahedron was possibly an astronomical measuring instrument for capturing the optimal sowing date of the winter grains (winter barley and winter wheat).
The main indication for this is the fact that the icosahedron, of which only one copy was found, completely fits into this hypothesis. Replicas of the dodecahedron and icosahedron were used to prove that both measuring instruments could accurately record the date up to the day.
Replica, of the original only four pieces exist in the world.
