Beautiful gouache by Hans Bayens (1924-2003). Bayens made this work during a stay in the Borinage (notification artist 2002). The gouache is in excellent condition and is beautifully framed with gold leaf and museum glass.

Bayens went to the National Higher Institute of Arts in Antwerp (1946-1949). He was a pupil of Isidore Opsomer. For some time he worked in Paris and he settled in Amsterdam in 1952. As a painter, Bayens worked in an impressionistic style. He made portraits of among others Willem Drees, Wim Kan and Maurits van Loon. As a sculptor, he made a number important bronze statues of Dutch authors such as Multatuli and Theo Thijssen. Together with colleagues like Herbert Fiedler, Kees Andrea, Nicolaas Wijnberg and Herman Berserik he formed the artists association called De Realisten.
