PROVENANCE: Robert van der Heijden collection, Netherland.
This unclothed pair of two male twins standing on a decorated round base with triangular motives all around. Also horizontal scarification's on the cheeks and in the pelvian area. Elongated faces. Interesting are the dots around the eyes.
According to the legend the Ibedji's twin's represent Abiku a monkey that entered the belly of a pregnant women who would give birth to a child that would not be able to live long, because her husband chased the monkeys from the village. The Orisha Ibedji dolls are there to protect the twins, but only if the wooden statues and the monkeys are feed well.
