Mid 20th century - Gold powder patinated- Provenance ex-Berg-en-Dal shop

Colon soldier top of a Linguist Staff, Ghana: Asante peoples, second half of 20th century, wood and gold powder paint.
Height: 30 cm or 11.80 inches . A hole in the middle of the base -see pictures .

Our exclusive Art may be viewed or picked up in David Norden's Buy African Antiques Shop in Antwerp.

PROVENANCE: Bought by a private collector in the 1970's in the shop of the Berg-en-Dal Afrika Museum in Nijmegen Netherland.

This linguist staff top depicts a soldier holding a ritual knife in one hand and a riffle on his shoulder, and on his back everything needed for a long walk . It is an instruction to go fighting with enough munitions. Linguists, called Akyeame, are important royal advisers. A linguist speaks for the chief and relays the words of those who wish to speak to the chief. Depending on the size of a state, a chief usually has two to six linguists to counsel and represent him. Linguists are eloquent speakers knowledgeable about history, customs, and the law. Their positions are usually inherited through their mothers, although a chief may appoint a linguist. The golden powder or leafs staffs carried by linguists feature carved figurative tops that relate the rich proverbs of the Akan peoples. These proverbs tell of the power of the chief, his right to rule, his responsibilities to his people, and how the people, in turn, should behave toward the chief, the state, and each other.

  • Reclamar a Catawiki a la menor incidencia. La figura llegó mal embalada y rota!. He tenido que devolverla al vendedor y este "señor" no ha querido reembolsarme los gastos. Mal profesional.
