PROVENANCE: Got it from Dr. Peter Westerdijk's collection, who wrote several books about African weapons.
A KORE MASK, amongst the Bamana one of the six initiation societies. The Kore society comprises eight classes or grades. The hyena also named Suruku is the emblem of one of these classes and represents greed and insatiableness. This masks brings wisdom and inspiration for Cubist artists like Picasso which cannot be overstated. William Rubin (1984: 290 ) found the profile head in the "Demoiselles d'Avignons" was inspired by a Bamana mask visible then in France in the Musée du Trocadero.
