Provenance: Private french collector from Paris.¨Probable age Mid XXth or older.
The Chamba use wooden dance crests carved as stylized bushcows in the "Mangam" masquerade, when they enlisted the aid of the ancestral spirits to ensure a successful harvest. The dancers wear these masks, while their whole body is covered by a garment of grass.
Smaller masks like this one have the same powers, but are used as passport mask to identify individuals of a tribe. The crust symbolize the invested power among the members of the Vara ( Kerchache).
Similar masks variations are found in the surrounding tribes ( Mama, etc..)
