The casing (mater) under the ring hanger is engraved with Persian characters; the outside is divided into 360 degrees; four different disc inserts that are engraved on both sides with vertical circles, azimuth angles, horizon, equator, twilight, variable hours, zenith, tropic lines and variable hours; the date ring above (rete) with astrological symbols. The back side is also divided into 360 degrees, with calendar, shadow-square, constellation, ecliptic, month and actual hours.

The astrolabe is considered as a flat armillary spheres, which means that, today, spherical astrolabes and astrolabes are called armillary spheres. The mapping is done with a stereographic projection. The centre of projection is a point on the armillary sphere or the celestial sphere. The southern or northern celestial poles are preferred because the heavens (seemingly) rotate around them. When the astrolabe was invented, it was only used for the northern sky. Because of this, the classic samples include the projection from the South Pole. The North Pole is the centre and the pivot point for the astrolabe.
