The Trojan War is an event that plays a central role in Greek mythology. A large portion of the mythological stories are in some way connected with this war. Homer's Iliad is an epic book, which describes an episode from the last year of the decade-long war against Troy. A coalition of Greeks, which Homer calls Achaeans, allegedly besieged Troy and brought it under the leadership of King Agamemnon. The Trojans he calls Dardanoi.
The war began, according to the myth,  after a quarrel between the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, after the goddess of discord, Eris, gave them a golden apple "for the fairest". Zeus sent the women to the Trojan king's son Paris, who ruled that Aphrodite was the fairest. In exchange, Aphrodite left the beautiful Helen, wife of Spartan King Menelaus, to fall in love with Paris. After Paris had taken Helen to Troy, all Greeks waged war against Troy. After a ten-year battle the Trojans lost the war to the Greeks through the ruse of the Trojan horse.
