poor condition, see description
Early Japanese scroll painting on silk with gold gilt/leaf. Comes with a cedar box, inscribed. When I bought it I was told it dates from the Edo period and certainly this scroll is old, although I cannot be more exact as I am not an expert.
Depicts the Shiba Onko story, a very traditional tale of a boy who calmly rescues his friend who is trapped inside a cauldron.
Painting is 126cm by 58cm and is mounted on a more recent (?) scroll 205cm by 70cm.
- Painting itself is in poor condition, with some loses to paint, much cracking and some more small pieces may fall off, signs of age, painting is dark/dull
- some detail is difficult to see due to the painting being dark, but there are leaves and ferns painted in the trees, see photos 14 and 15 for photos taken with a light shining on the painting
- the scroll mounting/backing is in reasonable condition but is dull, probably due to dirt. I am not sure if the backing is as old as the painting
Please also study the photos to see the condition!
