Mid-twentieth century Akan figure. 30 cm or 11.8 inches . Fair condition.
Compared to the large amount of Akwaba fertility statues , complete statues from the Akan with feets are rare. This one reinvented modern shapes , and the result is remarkable.
Height 30 cm crack in the face , see pictures. Sold without stand.
This female figure beautifully illustrates the beauty canons of the Akan tribe: perfect balance of features and pose , body summarized in basic volumes , strongly curved shapes , rings arount the neck , sleek face treatment. The squared head is subtly highlighted by the solid line of the eyebrows, which forms a continuity with the nose and large ears. Note the special Feet treatment, scarification in the back at the shoulders . The rich patina helps in all likelihood to interpret it's use , as a altar statue, or divination .
